Fernando Alonso miraculously walks away unscathed from horror smash at Australian Grand Prix - his second major crash in a year

Fernando Alonso says he is thankful to be alive after 200mph crash at the Australian Grand
Fernando Alonso (pictured left) has admitted he is lucky to be alive after walking away from a 200mph crash that left his obliterated McLaren (main image) scattered across the circuit and brought a halt to the Australian Grand Prix today - just a year after he was involved in another major smash. Alonso's right wheel clipped Esteban Gutierrez's Haas going into turn three of the 18th lap and the impact sent the Spaniard's McLaren hurtling into a barrier, smashing it to pieces before it flipped, rolled and flew end-over-end into another barrier. Miraculously the two-time world champion, who survived another horror crash just a year ago, emerged from the wreckage and walked gingerly over to Gutierrez, where the pair embraced. Touchingly, speaking after the incident 34-year-old Alonso said he jumped quickly out of the car because he knew his mother was watching at home and he did not want to worry her.
