Even now, nine months later, it's too dangerous to venture beyond a single acrid room here at Clandon Park, in London, following a fire last April (right) which destroyed 95 per cent of the building. Originally a dazzling white 40-foot cube, the Marble Hall (pictured after the inferno inset and left) at the stately home used to be described as one of the finest entrance halls in Britain but that changed following the blaze. Yesterday, for the first time since, outsiders were allowed inside to inspect the damage and to hear the current owners, the National Trust, discuss their plans.
