As 3,000 Iraqis and Iranians mass in Dunkirk, hell-bent on boarding trucks to London, a worrying dispatch from SUE REID at the squalid new front line in the battle to reach Britain

This is the front line of the new battle to get to Britain, writes SUE REID. The makeshift French camp is housing 3,000 Iraqis and Iranians who are waiting to slip across the Channel to the White Cliffs of Dover. Living amid filth and squalor, the crowds here grow daily as more and more people from the strife-torn Middle East arrive after traipsing through Europe, their hearts set on a new life in England. Already the camp at Grande-Synthe, five miles from Dunkirk on France's northern coast, has a doctor's surgery, a makeshift schoolroom and mobile vans giving free burgers to the newcomers who stand ankle-deep in mud beside hundreds of tents.
