Devoted couple who were married for 76 years died within three days of each other in the same care home room
Miles and Phyllis Higgin met as teenagers at a dance in 1933, and were inseparable throughout their 76-year marriage. Other than time apart during WWII when Mr Higgin served as a cook for the Royal Artillery, they did 'absolutely everything together'. Mrs Higgin died at the age of 97, and her husband followed three days later at the age of 99. Their only daughter said: 'I used to think my dad would go first because he was in worse health than my mum, but now I know that he was holding on for mum. He didn't want to leave her alone. Then when she had gone, he knew he could go too.' Pictured, left, on their wedding day in 1939, and right, on their 70th anniversary.
