Nightmare before Christmas: Families forced out of their homes by 'soul-destroying' floods are told it could be eight months before they return as forecasters warn of another SEVEN INCHES of rain after record fall of more than 13ins in just 24 hours
Families who were forced out of their homes by the 'soul-destroying' impact of Storm Desmond were told it could be several months before they can return as a war of words erupted over the nation's flooding defence systems. It came as the devastating storm claimed its second victim, with Cumbria Police confirming that a body had been found in a search of the River Kent in Kendal after an elderly man fell into the water yesterday. It was the second death caused by Storm Desmond after a 90-year-old pensioner was blown into the path of a bus in London on Saturday. MPs were today at loggerheads over the failure of £48million in anti-flood investment, with Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron claiming the problem had been compounded by the shelving of nearly 300 flood defence schemes which had been deemed 'low priority'. The clean-up operation, which is expected to run into the hundreds of millions, has already started in homes and shops in Cockermouth, Carlisle and Keswick in Cumbria (pictured).
