Witnesses described a 'large bang like a bomb had gone off' and a 'big explosion' upon impact at about 10.30am, while one local shopper described it as the worst accident they had ever seen. While one woman was pronounced dead at the scene on the high street area of the town, five further patients were treated by South East Coast Ambulance Service and taken to hospital. A man and woman were taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting, South London, both with serious injuries, while another man and woman went to Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough. A further woman with minor injuries was taken to Pembury Hospital in Tunbridge Wells.
