Paris city chiefs drain Canal Saint-Martin for the first time in 15 yearsOld radios, motorcycles and LOTS of bikes: Paris drains iconic canal for the first time in 15 years and uncover a host of discarded debris

The Canal Saint-Martin (inset) is at the heart of one of Paris' most exclusive neighbourhoods, but after 15 years an astonishing collection of discarded objects have accumulated under the water. The three-mile stretch of water hasn't been drained since 2001, and bicycles, motorcycles, old cameras, household furniture and even a pistol have already begun to surface in the 9.5million euro (£7million) clean-up operation. Last time it was drained, workers even discovered a car hidden in the water's murky depths.
