Mission accomplished! British astronaut Tim Peake makes history as he successfully space walks along the ISS to fix a faulty power unit 249 miles above the Earth - and even has time to take a selfie

Mission aborted! British astronaut Tim Peake and Nasa's Tim Kopra ordered back to ISS
The 43-year-old astronaut today become the first British citizen to perform a spacewalk as he joined Nasa astronaut Tim Kopra to repair a faulty power unit on the outside of the International Space Station. Major Peake emerged in to the vacuum of space in darkness as the ISS moved into the shadow of the Earth. The two astronauts were just illuminated by the light from the space station and their helmets. Just before leaving the airlock, Major Peake said it was a 'privilege' to be wearing the union jack on his arm and taking it out into the void of space. He has now made his way along the outside of the space station to the spot where they will carry out their repairs. The two astronauts will have just a 31 minute 'window' to perform the repair on the power unit while the space station is in the shadow of the Earth. They have to replace the faulty unit with the spare while the ISS is in darkness so there is no power passing through the solar arrays that could produce a dangerous spark.
