Just 24 hours ago waist-deep floodwater filled the streets of Cumbria and Lancashire leaving cars, homes and roads submerged.
Today, much of the deluge had subsided leaving mud, sediment and debris scattered across the residential streets.
As these remarkable comparison pictures show, residents now face the huge task of cleaning-up from the worst flooding to hit the region in years.
Over the weekend, homeowners in some of the worst hit areas including Carlisle and Cockermouth had to be evacuated from their properties as floodwater rose to waist-height.
Army personnel, firefighters and mountain rescue teams could be seen carrying residents through the muddy rising waters or escorting them via boat as they helped them to safety.
Floodwater lapped the doors of shops and homes, while living rooms and kitchens were left decimated by the 'unprecedented' scenes.
However, today – just 24 hours after water ran like a river through the streets - the rising water had finally drained away, leaving in its wake scenes of devastation and destruction.
