Happy New Year! Balloons fill the air in Tokyo after Sydney's traditional firework extravaganza as revellers across the globe usher in 2016 in spectacular style
Cities around the world have started welcoming in 2016 with fireworks displays and huge parties, in countries such as Japan, Australia and New Zealand. In Sydney, left, a spectacular display was centred around the world famous Harbour Bridge, which was lit up with colour, as revellers brought in the new year. In Auckland, bottom right, the world's first major city to see in 2016, people gathered for a fireworks and laser show from the high rise Sky Tower. While in the Japanese capital Tokyo, a traditional ceremony of releasing balloons on the stroke of midnight with people's new year wishes inside took place next to the Tokyo Tower.
