AU calls for all Burundi sides to respect people's rights

The African Union Peace and Security Commissioner Smail Chergui said the AU is concerned about the continued tensions in Burundi.
He told BBC Focus on Africa radio that "people are continuing to be killed... and human rights are in difficulty".
The AU's Peace and Security Council has been discussing the situation and Ambassador Chergui said they agreed:
  • to call on all sides to respect human rights, promote dialogue and make every effort to stop the killing
  • to make contingency plans for an East African force in case the situation deteriorates
The commissioner said the AU will set out a deadline.
