With foreign exchange scarcity FX still bitting harder, thereby squeezing many companies into bottoming out, the Importers association of Nigeria ( IMAN ), a group which said that they honestly involved into importation to grow the economy, has called on the federal government to grant FX incentives to genuine Importers in the country, to enable them import goods and machines that will enhance economic growth and create employment in the country.
IMAN`s national president Ralph John, a marinetime expert and an Economist, while granting a media interview in portharcourt, said the recent granting of waiver of #197 / $1 as against #400 , $1 to the pilgrims by the federal government should rather be extended to the productive sector of the economy, including Importers whom he discribed as the growers of the economy, John said although they in IMAN were not condemning the federal government gesture, but they thought the same gesture, or even a better FX window, should be given to investors like Importers, who he said, "add value to the economy," before extending to tourists who's sole aim of traveling were only for leisure.
He discribed the Importers as," critical stakeholders in the marinetime industry," saying that it will be difficult to check smuggling when Forex was scarce and out of reach of businessmen who need it mostly.
With the economy still struggling with almost bottoming out to recession and revenue target missed on quarter-to-quarter since late last year by the custom service ( NCS ), while smuggling continue unabated the IMAN president advised the federal government to partner with they association IMAN and not just them alone but," also extend the partnership to BROADSTREET TODAY NG, to checkmate both the prices of foreign currency in the FX market and smuggling which he said hurts the economy further.
John an economist with a reverend gentleman, briefing with some journalists in portharcourt, lamented the rate of smuggling in the country, but informed that as a patriotic involved in business of importation, they have formed themselves into a group of ``genuine Importers " under the eages of IMAN.
