Eight injured after fleeing driver collides with Uber vehicle downtown: SIU
The SIU has been called to investigate a serious crash in the Financial District that sent eight people to hospital Sunday morning.
The crash occurred near Bay and Wellington streets at around 3 a.m.
SIU spokesperson Jason Gennaro told reporters Sunday afternoon that the collision occurred as police were in pursuit of a fleeing Acura.
“Sometime before 3 a.m. in the area of York Street and Bremner Boulevard, Toronto police attempted to stop a vehicle. That vehicle fled. The vehicle then, travelling northbound on Bay Street, struck a second vehicle here at Wellington (Street). That second vehicle was operating as an Uber vehicle,” Gennaro said.
"After that collision occurred, eight people were injured. They were transported to three local area hospitals. At least three of those persons were seriously injured.”
Gennaro could not say how many people were in each vehicle and was unable to provide the ages or genders of any of the victims.
He also would not say why police were in pursuit of the Acura.
Toronto Paramedics Services told CP24 Sunday morning that one of the victims was trapped in a vehicle for about an hour before they were extricated. Paramedics also said a victim was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.
Gennaro, however, said he did not have confirmation that any of the injuries were life-threatening.
One person was arrested in connection with the accident but Gennaro could not say if charges had been laid.
Eight investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist has been assigned to the case.
The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
The area is closed to traffic as the SIU continues to probe the circumstances around the crash.
The SIU is asking anyone with information, including cell phone video, to come forward.
