Wrap up - the big freeze is heading south for the weekend: Forecasters warn of -15C temperatures as four inches of snow causes chaos on the roads

UK weather forecasters warn of -15C temperatures as snow causes chaos
These scenes in the Peak District yesterday (left) are now set to be repeated across the South of England. The snow over the North and Midlands heralded the year's first widespread cold snap, and even Kent and Cornwall could see at least a dusting by tomorrow. In the North and as far south as Birmingham yesterday, falls of up to four inches made driving hazardous. Today will be bitterly cold with wintry showers over high ground, particularly in Wales and the South West. And tomorrow (bottom right) could see snow reaching as far as the Thames Estuary. It could be the coldest night in nearly four years, with clear skies and a hard frost. Temperatures in many parts of Northern England will drop to -7C (19F) with mountain areas experiencing as low as -15C (5F). Also pictured (top right): A satellite image shows widespread snow cover over the most mountainous areas of Britain yesterday.
