Some householders in the North-West are expected to be homeless for up to eight months after the unprecedented flooding, while 42,000 homes in Lancashire were left without electricity after power stations were knocked out by the floods - with more rain expected later this week. The risk of flooding has not ended, with dozens of warnings still in place on rivers which have burst their banks as a result of receiving 16in of rain within two days. Even as the flood waters recede from the hardest-hit areas around Cumbria, 4in of rain is forecast to fall on Wednesday and Thursday, which could complicate the clean-up efforts, pictured in St Michael's on Wyre near Lancaster (left and top right, where heartbroken resident Julie McCord is being consoled by a friend after inspecting the damage at her home) and Carlisle (bottom right, where a partially-decorated Christmas tree was discarded outside a property).
