A month of rainfall hit some regions in a single day, prompting already swollen rivers to burst their banks and flood into towns and cities. Mytholmroyd in West Yorkshire (main) was among the worst hit, where up to 6ft of water was seen in the streets. Flooding has hit towns in the north throughout December but for the first time, populated city areas have been affected, such as Leeds and Manchester (top left). In Croston, Lancashire, people could be seen wading through the water in lifejackets as a care home was evacuated.
